As a new sponsor, my go-to slogan is “easy does it”—for both me and my sponsee. I want to do all I can for my sponsee, and she also wants to jump in with all the vigor of a newcomer and work a rigorous program. Although a strong foundation is important to overcoming compulsive overeating, over enthusiasm may lead to burn out and may jeopardize our long-term healing. I approach sponsorship “one day at a time,” but my goal for both of us it to cultivate lasting recovery. To balance this I turn back to “easy does it.” Be realistic and forgiving, just like I want my Higher Power to be.
