Step 9 is still down the road for me as I have just started working on Step 6 with my sponsor. But I’ve been part of a 12 Step Study Group and regularly listen to A Vision for You’s meetings (see pg 3 events), and I’ve thought quite a bit about it. Mostly because I’m dreading making amends! Having been brought up in a household of faith, the concept of asking for forgiveness – and giving it – is not unknown to me, but I have realized over my past two years in OA that . . .
Our way of life is all about putting Love into action. Before program I really didn't know how to love (and I am still learning every day). But one thing that I know is that the Love that has been shown to me again and again is astonishing. When I walked through the door of my very first meeting, I was welcomed and accepted exactly as I was, and this is still true today which has been life-changing! I don't have to do or say or be anything to be loved here. Love is freely given with no expectations. That kind of Love . . .
I joined OA over 27 years ago and feel very grateful that the vast majority of that time I have been able to keep 150 pounds off and not compulsively overeat. A critical part of that has been working the 12 steps. They were quite easy until I hit 8 and 9 . . .
“I need OA, if only for the fact that it gives me a place where I can say, “I made a birthday cake for my sister and ate the whole thing myself,” and everyone in the room nods and says, “Yeah.”

How many times have I become a controlling person? My life revolved around demanding that everyone do things my way and becoming obsessed with the “right” way. Then when that didn’t work, I became so submissive that others could easily victimize me. I was led into many intolerable events just to please someone else.
