Abstinence in Overeaters Anonymous is defined as the action of refraining from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors while working towards or maintaining a healthy body weight. Spiritual, emotional, and physical recovery is the result of living the Overeaters Anonymous Twelve-Step program. (Conference Policy 1988b, amended 2002, 2009, 2011)
I’ve been thinking a lot about abstinence lately. I’ve had off-and-on abstinence, and I’m currently on a six-month stretch. This time around it’s a dirty abstinence, and you can tell. I’m heavier now than when I first came into program. I may not binge the way I used to, but . . .
Report from the “Help! I can’t find a sponsor” workshop
Not having a sponsor sucks. That was one message from the workshop on October 1 that focused on being in program without a sponsor. There’s no getting around it. Without a sponsor, it’s harder to get abstinent, it’s harder to work the steps, and it’s harder to have supportive relationships. Some of the words to describe the experience were pretty vivid: . . .
Abstinence. One of the biggest challenges I hear other sponsors talking about is how do I help a sponsee get abstinent? That’s a good question. For me, it’s really important to remember that I’m not responsible for whether or not my sponsee is abstinent, but . . .
True confessions time. Last month when I sat down to do my writing for NoVAtions, I misread the topic for the October issue, and instead of writing about the slogans, I wrote about abstinence (the November topic). After I proofread my piece, I hit send. I was so tickled that, for once, I turned in my writing on time! Then when I saw the draft of the newsletter the day before it was to be printed I realized my mistake. I was so embarrassed. I panicked—I didn't have time to rewrite the article. It would have to go out as it was (gulp, humble pie was on the menu that day). Not only had I made a mistake, but it was such a public one. Now you would know how stupid and careless I am! I am a fraud. I don't deserve a seat at the table (or even under the table). The only reason I am IG Chair is that no one else would do it (well, that is pretty much the truth, LOL!). Blah, blah, blah.

Are you the speaker-getter for your meeting? OA NoVA Intergroup is here to help! Email with the dates and times needed, abstinence requirements, meeting format, and any other information, and we’ll help you get the word out.
Attention OA Members!
November and December Intergroup meetings are especially important this year. Does your group have a meeting rep? If not you can still attend as a visitor with a voice but no vote.
We are currently working on an update of our NoVA IG Bylaws and the sub-committee hopes to have a draft reading at the November meeting.
It is also time for nominating new IG Board Members - the election will be held at the December IG meeting.
Are you new to meditation? Do you find it difficult to meditate? Do you want to deepen your existing meditation practice? Do you want to try new ways to meditate? Do you want to experience meditation with others?
If so, please join the Northern Virginia OA Intergroup for this workshop!
